Among the travel books I read before my trip to Denmark was a book with the eloquent title 1,000 places to see before you die. The part about Denmark is not much, but it left a strong impression on me, including Andersen’s hometown of Odense and the typical Danish dish smorrebrod Taking a bite of smorrebord, the taste buds come into contact with the soft, buttery barley cake, the thin and chewy layer of ham, the crisp, cool herb layer that leaves a pungent taste in the throat, and the salty jelly that melts in the mouth. It’s a strange feeling that’s hard to describe.
